What is Magnesium Oxide board “MgO board”?

Magnesium Oxide (MgO) board is water resistant, high strength, fire proof, mold proof, and insect proof.

Magnesium Oxide board “MgO board” is a factory-made, non-insulating sheathing board product. It can be used for a number of applications including wall and ceiling linings, fascias, soffits, tile backing and underlayment. It is made of magnesium oxide, a type of mineral cement, and is commonly called simply “MgO” (pronounced emm-gee-oh) due to its chemical composition of magnesium (chemical symbol Mg) and oxygen (chemical symbol O). Think of MgO as a type of sheathing board (sort of like drywall or cement board) but with much- improved characteristics such as fire resistance, weather ability, strength, resistance to mold, mildew, and so on.

The materials of mgo board are Magnesia(Mgo), Magnesium Chlorid(MgCl2) or Magnesium sulphate(MgSO4),Fiberglass,sawdust and Perlite.

1) MgO board is better than fiber cement, because the dust wasn’t as irritating and the composition is easier on cutting tools. Throwing the MgO board in a bucket of water for two months had no effect.

2) cuts are smooth and easy with conventional carbide-tipped circular saw blades and that ordinary bimetal jigsaw and multi­tool blades work fine for cutting around penetrations. 

3) can also be fastened with high-quality screws (conventional black drywall screws sometimes snap off), framing nails, and siding nails.

4) The material’s extreme fire resistance can eliminate the need for a second layer of drywall (and its associated material and labor costs) in many fire-rated assemblies.
